The Assignment

Carolina Bomanite brought me in to document the completed Lions Plaza at Statesville Christian School and create photography and video for submission to the American Society of Concrete Contractors’ Decorative Concrete Council Project Awards. The goal was to go beyond simply documenting the finished project and create visuals that clearly communicated the scale, craftsmanship, and extensive custom detailing throughout the space.

The Approach

I captured the project from a mix of architectural, detail, and aerial perspectives, building a complete visual story of the finished plaza. The coverage focused heavily on the elements that made the project unique, including the custom Microtop finishes in the school’s colors, hand-applied school logo and lettering, contrasting bands, fire pit, accessible walkways, and the relationship between the concrete work and the surrounding gathering spaces.

For the video, I focused on creating a concise project story that could showcase both the overall transformation and the details behind Carolina Bomanite’s work, giving the award judges a strong sense of the project beyond what could be communicated through still photography alone.

The Result

The final photography and video became the visual foundation of Carolina Bomanite’s award submissions, and the project ultimately earned two First Place awards from the Decorative Concrete Council.

First Place — Project Video, Over 5,000 SF

The Project Video award was especially significant, directly recognizing the video created to tell the story of the project and making the finished media itself part of the project’s award-winning result.
