The Assignment

Carolina Bomanite needed a finished set of project photography documenting its specialty concrete work at East Coast Honda in Myrtle Beach.

The installation was part of a prototype dealership design and incorporated locally sourced aggregates, exposed finishes and reinforced vehicle display areas designed to handle the demands of an active automotive dealership.

The assignment was about more than photographing the finished building. The concrete itself was the project.

That meant showing the overall installation while also getting close enough to capture the aggregate, texture, edges, joints and transitions that demonstrate the quality of the finished work.

The Approach

The photography was built around two perspectives: showing how the concrete fits into the architecture and getting close enough to see the craftsmanship within it.

Wide architectural compositions established the dealership, vehicle display areas, entrances and surrounding hardscape. From there, tighter detail photography focused on the exposed aggregate, surface texture and transitions between the concrete and adjacent materials.

Low camera angles were intentionally used throughout the shoot to bring the surface into the foreground. With the right light, those perspectives allowed individual pieces of aggregate, texture and subtle variations in the finish to become part of the composition rather than disappearing into a typical wide architectural photograph.

Aerial photography provided the opposite perspective, showing the layout of the hardscape and its relationship to the dealership as a whole.

Timing was also important. Working later in the day created stronger directional light across the concrete and gave the finished dealership a warmer, more dimensional look while allowing the texture of the installation to stand out.

The goal throughout the shoot was simple: photograph the project in a way that someone who wasn’t standing there could still understand the quality of the work.

The Result

The final image set gives Carolina Bomanite a complete visual record of the East Coast Honda installation, from the overall dealership environment down to the aggregate and finish that define the project.

The combination of architectural, detail and aerial photography created a library of images that can support project portfolios, award submissions, marketing, social media and future business development.

More importantly, the photographs put the focus where it belongs: on the craftsmanship.

Instead of simply showing a completed dealership, the finished imagery shows how Carolina Bomanite’s concrete contributes to the design, durability and character of the finished space.
